Volunteers often ask how they can assist Habitat families beyond the construction site. One of the ways that we suggest is through participation in "Build-a-Backpack"-an annual program that provides school supplies and backpacks to Habitat kids for the upcoming school year! Backpacks will be distributed at Habitat's "Back to School Picnic" in mid-August.

Habitat Suffolk's Homeownership program is "A hand up, not a hand out." By no means are our houses given away; Habitat Homeowners work hard to complete their sweat equity requirements and prepare themselves for the responsibilities of home ownership. We believe Build-a-Backpack introduces Habitat kids to our continual emphasis on education, hard work, and community involvement.

Thanks so much to the many donors who help make this program so successful each year; we hope you will participate again! Below is a Suggested Supply List. * Build! Have fun shopping & building your backpack!

* Label your backpacks as "Elementary", "Middle", or "High."
* Drop-off all backpacks & supplies to the Habitat Office by Friday, August 5th
- Office: 643 Middle Country Rd. (Rt.25), Middle Island -across from and just west of Walmart
