How can I get a house?

Habitat houses go to eligible applicants who are selected by our Family Selection Committee and Board of Directors.  To see eligibility requirements, please click here.  If you fall within our application criteria, you may click here to find out how to apply

When can I get an application? How can I get on the list?

Applications are only available by attending an Application Orientation Meeting.  When an orientation is scheduled to occur, you can find out more information and sign up to attend by clicking here.  We do not mail out applications, nor do we keep a waiting list.

Is this a “lottery”?

No.  Habitat homeowners are selected by an application process. 

Is the house free?

No.  Habitat homeowners pay a 20 – 30 year mortgage at 0 % interest. Like other Suffolk County residents, they also pay property taxes and homeowners insurance.

Can I get a mortgage from Habitat?

No.  Habitat only provides mortgages for applicants who have been accepted into the program.

Do you help with rent or down-payment assistance?

No.  Habitat only builds/rehabilitates homes for applicant accepted into the program.  For a list of community partners who may be able to help you, please click here.

I only make $18,000 a year, can I apply?

No.  Habitat has strict income guidelines.  These figures are calculated considering factors affecting homeowners that Habitat cannot control.  Habitat believes that without these minimum income figures, homeownership is not feasible.  For a list of community partners who may be able to help you, please click here.

How can I volunteer?

Any person from any background is welcome to volunteer with Habitat for Humanity of Suffolk.   There are a variety of ways to get involved.  We have an Information Line that gets updated weekly for individuals and opportunities for groups as well.  For more information, please visit our volunteer page.

Can my children volunteer with me?

The minimum age to work on a Habitat worksite is 16 years old due to insurance regulations.  Youth and children under the age of 16 can get involved in other ways.  For more information, please visit our volunteer page.

How do I make a donation?

Donations can be made via phone, mail, or online.  You can make a celebration donation in honor of a special person or event.  For more information, please visit our donation page

Do you accept furniture/appliance donations?

Yes, with conditions.  All donations are accepted through our ReStore in Ronkonkoma.  Please visit their website, email them, or call them (631-521-7789) for details.

Do you accept clothing or household items donations?No, but we partner with organizations who can use those items.  For a list of agencies who may accept your donation, please click here
 
Do you take donations of cars?

Yes! Please visit our CARS FOR HOMES page for information on how to donate your car, truck, boat, motorcycle or RV to help Habitat for Humanity build more homes.

Can you make repairs/renovations to my home?

Habitat for Humanity of Suffolk builds/rehabilitates homes for people accepted into our homeownership program.  We do not do repairs, renovations, or rehabilatations otherwise.  For a list of community partners who may be able to help you, please click here.

Can I donate my house to you?
