| Kathy Unforeseen struggles bombarded many Long Islanders on September 11, 2001, including Kathy, who lost her job. “I had worked in the Financial District and I was making good money.” Soon after, Kathy suffered a bad fall that left her disabled and unable to work. She struggled to provide for her two sons, but soon found herself with nothing. “I got a severance package when I lost my job, but when I got hurt, I went through everything—my savings, my pension, and my 401(k). When you can’t work, it goes fast.” After moving in to a Habitat home in 2007, Kathy returned to school, embarking on a new administrative career. Both boys are doing well, and 9-year-old Salvatore has become an avid Habitat volunteer, helping with many programs and preparing lunch for volunteer groups. According to Kathy, “He just wants to tell everyone about Habitat and all the people who helped us!” |
Women Build
The Women Build program is a volunteer program designed for individuals who want to make an impact on the community they live in. Each year Habitat for Humanity of Suffolk County will designate an entire house to be built entirely by women! The women build program is about educating women to take the initiative to be involved in the building and advocacy of affordable housing in our communities. E-mail volunteer@habitatsuffolk.org for more information on being part of our Women Build program!
