Youth and Students

Habitat for Humanity of Suffolk encourages youth of all ages to get involved in the Long Island community! Each year, young Long Islanders help us with fundraising, building, office work, and hospitality for volunteers and homeowners.

Since 1991 students from over 80 Long Island High Schools and Colleges have been raising funds and consciousness concerning the need for decent affordable housing. Students have raised the funds for the building materials and have built over 20 houses in Suffolk County communities. In the Fall of each year, all campuses that wish to take part in the Student Build will make a pledge of how much they plan to raise, and work throughout the year fundraising to meet that goal. In the Spring of each year, the students will get to come out and help to build the home they’ve raised funds for.

In accordance with safety regulations, all construction volunteers must be at least 16 years of age, and all volunteers under 18, must be accompanied by a guardian. View our volunteer opportunites both on and off the work site.

Non- Construction Volunteer Opportunites
Volunteers under 16 should not be discouraged because they cannot build on the construction site; there are many ways to be involved with Habitat for Humanity on an individual and group basis.

Serve Morning Refreshments or Lunch Beginning at 9:00 am refreshment volunteers can bring & serve coffee, tea, muffins, donuts, or bagels as construction volunteers are checking in and completing their waiver forms.Construction volunteers take a lunch break at noon. Refreshment volunteers can bring and serve sandwiches, salads, soup and hot/ cold drinks and meals. These services can be provided year round. To set up a time to help with hospitality, please email volunteer@habitatsuffolk.org.

Landscaping Volunteers age 14 and up can help with landscaping days. If you would like more details on setting up landscaping at a new Habitat home or on organizing a clean up to help a current homeowner, please email volunteer@habitatsuffolk.org.

Housewarming for House Dedications
This is a very special day for each Habitat Homeowner. The dedication celebrates the completion of their house. Volunteers are welcome to provide refreshments for the Dedication Ceremony. Volunteers often put together gift baskets, which they present to the family during the ceremony, and help the family settle comfortably into a brand new home. If you would like to present a gift to a family at their dedication, please contact volunteer@habitatsuffolk.org.

Shower the Family on thier Dedication
Fill the pantry with non-perishable food items to start the family off right as they receive the keys to their new home. Or fill a laundry basket, hamper or garbage pail with household cleaning supplies, kitchen needs, first aid needs or lawn care needs.

Annual Family Support Programs Habitat Suffolk’s Homeownership program is “A Hand Up, Not a Hand Out.” Our Annual Family Support Programs assist our families throughout the year. Through our continual emphasis on education, hard work, and community involvement, Habitat families participate in a community service projects as a way to “pay-it-forward.”
Help a Habitat Family through our Annual Support Programs:
Thanksgiving Food Basket Drive in November
Adopt-A-Family Holiday Gift Program in December
Build-a-Backpack Program in the Summer
